Joe Biden is at an inflection point, there is no turning back. If he stays in the race, Democrats are not going to come on side. They will be furious that he has dragged the party into the bog. He is down in every battleground state, he is losing the national popular vote, and every public appearance since the debate he has struggled to convey a cogent message. He cannot land shots on Trump, instead frequently kicking in own goals and tripping over his own laces.
Speaking of Trump, America’s favorite convicted criminal according to Gallup, the RNC finished up its four five day convention last night. The Dear Leader delivered the longest convention speech in history. The speech was meandering, boring, and largely substance-free. However, despite the odious promises to conduct mass deportations and restrict abortion nationwide, the Republicans are winning. They believe that all they have to do is allow Biden to muddle along until November, and they will turn out just enough voters to win the battleground states, take the Senate, and hold the House. Frankly, at this current juncture, they are right. There is no path for Biden. He cannot win.
Side note: If you aren’t a true lost soul, you may have missed Kid Rock’s entire performance. God bless you. It was impeccable. He demonstrated no command of the English language, no rhythm, and it was incredibly uncool. I think the liberals have won the culture war after all.
I am holding out hope, mainly based on the words of another bald man from Delaware - Senator Chris Coons.
A true “power-donut” if there ever was one.
According to reporting from Axios, Chris Coons at an event in Colorado today (7/19) said Biden is “weighing” who the best candidate to beat Trump is. “I am confident he is hearing what he needs to hear from colleagues, from the public,” said the Senator and co-chair of Biden’s re-election campaign. This is a good sign.
We have known from the beginning of this saga that, up until Biden drops out, he will claim he is staying in. In fact, he just put out a statement saying that he would be returning to the campaign “next week.”
I predict at least several more prominent Senators, as well as many House members, will come out and oppose Biden’s reelection bid. It is 1:27pm on Friday and already at least six House members and two Senators have come out and urged Biden to step aside. I’m editing this at 8:07pm, and I believe we are at 20% of the House and Senators including Sherrod Brown (D-OH).
Politicians of all stripes desire one thing above all else: victory. Joe Biden presents a nearly insurmountable path to victory for Democrats, and the Democratic politicians understand. This process may not be moving as quickly as we in the coconut-boat would like, but it is moving. Day after day, Biden’s position becomes increasingly untenable.
I have sympathy for Biden. He has been a 50-year public servant, has led the country out of the COVID crisis, and seemingly gotten no credit. Unfortunately, that is the way the cookie crumbles sometimes, and he will be remembered much more positively if he gracefully passes the torch instead of clinging to the wheel.
So, in the mean time, we cling to crumbs. We cling to Coons. And we hope.
Stay strong Coconut Tree.
